Recently, I simultaneously overcame my greatest fear, and fulfilled a lifelong dream.
I GOT A JOB AT STARBUCKS.
To tell you the truth I am overjoyed.
But to get to this beautiful state, I had to let go of some not-so-beautiful beliefs.
1. If I don't make enough money to live as an entrepreneur, I am a failure.
For my whole life, I have held this belief close to my heart.
I thought, "If I can't take care of myself, all by myself, I am worthless."
I believed I had to be a lone wolf to win.
And here I am, embracing failure, admitting 'defeat' by choosing to rely on someone else for income.
And I couldn't be happier.
2. If I don't get six-figure corporate job, I am a failure.
I spent two years of my life in business school, and for those two years, I felt like there was something wrong with me.
I mean, there had to have been. I didn't want the thing everyone around me wanted.
At first, I listened. I played along. I was a good boy.
I got the corporate job. I wore the suit. I wore the smile.
And then, I didn't.
But the pressure to get a corporate job didn't go away.
It continues to be reinforced by my friends, society, and my own mind.
And then I got a job at Starbucks.
And i started to feel like less of a failure,
And more of a winner.
I can still write and speak, which makes me oh-so-happy.
and i finally have a customer-facing job, A dream I've had for years.
I realized I have all I need to be the happiest me.
It's difficult to describe the magnitude of the fear I felt before getting this job.
This might help you understand.
I feel gypped.
The very thing I've been scared of this whole time...
The moment in which I saw the most failure...
What from the outside seemed near-death...
Turned out to be the most beautiful thing.
FEAR IS THE WORST CRIMINAL.
It robs you of the most blissful experiences in life...
It keeps you 'safe' and saves you from 'getting hurt'...
Time and time again, fear steals the best parts of life from you...
And keeps it all for itself.
And you know this, because this has happened to you before.
YET, YOU STILL LET IT ROB YOU.
So why aren't you doing what you're scared of?
Why aren't you asking yourself the hard questions?
And more importantly...
WHY ARE YOU GIVING SO MANY FUCKS ABOUT
FITTING INTO EVERYONE ELSE'S DEFINITION OF SUCCESS?
Have you taken time to make your own definition?
Do you know what you really want?
Are you stumped on figuring out what you want?
LOOK TO YOUR PAST.
Actions you have already taken show you what ideas you actually cared about enough to bring into the real world.
To figure out what you want now, take hints from what you wanted before.
You have a much better idea of what you want than you're willing it admit to yourself.
You know exactly what you want, you're just too scared to go and get it.
And you have lots of reasons to be scared too...
Your parents won't approve of you
your friends won't approve of you
you'll lose money
you'll get dumber
you'll make less money
you'll be laughed at
you won't be taken seriously
you'll get stuck forever
There are a million and one reasons why you should listen to your fear and stay safe.
But the law holds true:
If you keep up this pattern...
You'll stay on the wrong side of the most beautiful parts of life.
I got over my fear of asking for help.
I got over my fear of not being accepted by my peers.
I got over my fear of being a failure.
I got a job at Starbucks.
And I am the luckiest, happiest, most fearless me for it.
As time passes...
Whether you like it or not...
YOU ARE CHOOSING WHO YOU BECOME.
WHO ARE YOU CHOOSING TO BE?
In the game of life, you pick the rules.
You pick what winning looks like for you.
So pick whatever you want.
And get winning.
